A pistol resided in my father’s nightstand drawer. My father made it clear that we children were allowed to shoot anytime we wanted, as long as an adult accompanied us the hundred yards down to the shooting range by the creek. Later, as we got older and my father was satisfied that we would act responsibly by ourselves, we just had to tell him or my mother where we were. As a result of this environment, firearms presented no mystery or temptation to us. We learned from an early age that responsibility was part and parcel of using a gun, and we would never have considered breaking the trust my father had put in us.
After Kenya closed, I well remember the flyer from a Texas outfitter announcing that African legend Finn Aagaard would be taking over the company’s exotics hunting, giving a real safari flavor to the hunting of Texas’s many nonnative species, some of which were originally from Africa. As a guide Finn was successful and popular. Given his tremendous experience with both game and clients, this was no surprise. But anyone who knew Finn, and the outfitter he was working for, was also not surprised when he very shortly got fed up with the hunting ethics (or lack thereof) he was dealing with.
He did not object to elephant hunting, but while he enjoyed the hunting, he invariably regretted the killing. I have been in on the death of only three elephant, but I felt exactly the same way, and this was before I even met Finn. Finn was an excellent shot. I can say that without qualification since I have spent much of my adult life as a professional marksman. He had no trace of the know-it-all attitude so common among outdoor writers; he never suggested that he knew all he needed to know about shooting but on the contrary sought every chance to learn anything that he had not encountered before.
